Like many of villagerrr's songs, "Burnout" is the story of hanging on by a thread. Singer, songwriter, and producer Mark Scott continues to mine the beauty and tragedy from the quotidian: gas pumps, parking lots, and band shirts are just a few of the evocative touchstones. His voice is more delicate than usual here, mirroring the tenuousness—it's all just barely holding together.
It's been a big year for villagerrr. Their most-recent album 'Tear Your Heart Out', released in March 2024, introduced them to a national audience. Their September European tour with Real Estate, an introduction for international audiences.
But Scott's songwriting remains intently focused on family, community, connection, despite their burgeoning success. Like the twinge of melancholy at the sight of a sunset, "Burnout" tracks the give and take of friendship, the joy and terror of being needed. And it lands with an optimistic tone, in one of the more beautiful portions of the villagerrr catalog:
Nobody told you
Nobody cares
Reach out and touch me
Someone is here
